I don't have a set time for turning off the heat. I won't run the air until Memorial Day weekend so the thermostat is set to heat until at least that point, but often it doesn't get switched to AC until later than that. I keep the thermostat fairly low so it usually hasn't run for a month by that time anyway.

We had a thread about turning ON the heat, how about when do you turn it OFF for the season?

February's end is about here, and March can be nasty. Here in Upstate NY, March always has a surprise storm for us, guaranteed. 3 years ago, we had a full 35" fall in less than 16 hours on about March 16, to give you an idea.

So, around the end of March, I begin looking for when to turn off the heat.

April of late has been very cool, and instead of April showers, we have May showers!

But those first WARM days, I shut heat OFF, and throw open the windows to get some fresh air in the house!!!

I'm bipolar and have SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) so I am counting down the days until the end of winter!!! As I get older, the longer winter seems to be, even though the calendar stays the same. Although this year we have 1 extra day of winter, lol as it's leap year.
In Nov I start counting..."only 5 MOS. To go!!""
Now it's "only 5 weeks to go!!"

This was in reality a very MILD winter, though. Mostly 30-40s. Only a few bitter cold or below zero days. Normally jan-feb are cold... That's when a 30° day is actually a"heat wave". Lol.

So, when do you, of when do you start contemplating turning off the heat???

It’s a rare day that I “throw open the windows”. Frankly it’s too much work to open them and shut them every time I come home and leave, and I’m just not comfortable having my windows open when Im sleeping. So mine stay closed ( unless it’s that “ rare day”.

I turn the heat off usually sometime in April. I haven’t even thought about it yet this year. We just finally got snow last night - I love cold weather. Hate it when the heat starts.

The heat is on a thermostat. When the outside temperature gets warm enough to warm the house, the heat won't come on. Probably end of May, to mid June.

The AC is also on the thermostat. When the outside temperature gets high enough to heat the inside of the house, the AC comes on.

I only open 3. The front door storm door window opens, I latch the door so our furry child does not get out.

Then I open the bathroom window, which is almost directly Across from the front door on the opposite side of the house.

Then I open the kitchen window, a wide slider that allows good fresh air in.

That doesn't take less than 3 mins to open and close.

Ok, I think my last sentence is a double negative!!!.

Anyway we do not have central ac, have 4 window units, but only try to run one, no more than 2, at any given time.
So a auto Thermostat would be like ridiculous.

I think it ends up mid April that I turn it off too. When it stops being needed.

We built an earth-berm house. No AC needed-- humid, low 90s summer days and inside temp only gets up to 75. A simple fan &/or dehumidifier helps when needed.....House would stay ~55-58 even in winter without heat. With wood burning boiler system there's a lot of thermal inertia, so turning it on & off would not work well. Early & late in the heating season we just use an electric space heater to supplement comfort in the living room-- a 1000w unit only costs ~a buck-and-a-half to run all day.

Then there's the time honored way: heat yourself, not the whole house. https://www.lowtechmagazine.com/2015...ot-spaces.html
Well, I'm nearly 73. And the older I get, the less tolerance I have for high heat.

I grew up in southern california, and have been moving northward ever since.

I guess I just ain't right.

Usually sometime in May although the frequency of the heat turning on begins to notably decrease in April.

I turn the heat off every day so we can leave the patio doors open and have fresh air. But I live in Las Vegas so there are few days when we really NEED heat. I think the patio doors were closed for 2 days this winter because it was cold outside. In the Winter I cook a lot in the crockpot or bake and that adds heat to the house. I also burn candles a lot.

For here, that's not over the top frugal. Our temps usually run in the 60's and 70's this time of year. At night while the lows are in the 40's I turn the heat back on at night. Usually set to 60 or 65.

I turn the heat off when I know that it will consistently be warm enough to not require any heat.
