In related news, the last 2 nights have been good wins over the Dodgers. And last night’s brawl should yield a good, long-ish suspension for Yasiel Puig. Oh I am so sad...
From Kruk and Kuip, as well as the talking heads on the post game show, there has been a great deal of talk about how having won three straight, the last two over LA, will fire the Giants up to make a run at getting back into the race.
Of course they do this while either ignoring, or forgetting that they have said all of these things several times previously during the season, whenever SF had put together a modest winning streak, and nothing came of it.

Yeah, well, in a difficult season, and with one of the highest payrolls in all of baseball, they’re trying to drum up as much interest as they can. That’s their job, until it becomes near ridiculous to do that.

I understand, the people that pay them would not be happy if they started writing the team off for the year while there is still a chance. It annoys me a bit that this notion of "momentum" keeps getting life breathed into after after several studies have established that there is no reliable relationship between what a team has done the day before, or the week before, and what follows. I figure that if I, an amateur, has taken the trouble to keep up on the latest research, the guys who get paid to talk about baseball for a living ought to have bothered as well.
Three nights after the talking heads were so juiced up about the Giants momentum from their three game win streak, the team has lost three straight. The Heads are at it right now as I'm typing and they have done a 180. Tonight it has been all doom and gloom. The team appears to be going through the motions. There is no inspiration, no energy, they look sluggish. They aren't picking one another up. They aren't hitting for power, they aren't running the bases very smartly, they hit singles but do nothing else. There is no sign of desire. The veterans appear fatigued.
Hard to believe that these were the same three Heads who were so full of optimism after the second win over LA.
Bruce Bochy is 63 years old and in his 24th season as a manager. He isn't the sort to to allow his team to coast once it was clear that the post season was out of reach in a given year, but these guys may coast anyway.
It might be a good time for him to step down. The Giants are years away from being contenders again. The veterans are all getting older, the young guys that they have don't appear to have any future All Stars among them save Dereck Rodriguez , and the front office has resisted tearing the team apart to rebuild for the future.
There is one thing left for Bruce to shoot for. The team is getting clobbered by the Reds again today, and after this loss, Bochy's career managerial record will stand at 1914-1919, five games under .500. The Giants will have 37 games remaining after today. SF would need to go 22-15 for Bruce to end the season...and possibly his career, above .500 at 1936-1934. That would be .594 ball the rest of the way. I doubt that they can manage it.
Giants have lost 4 out of 5 since getting fired up last week against LA. On top of that comes the news that Buster Posey will soon be shutting down his 2018 season to have hip surgery.
Now official, Buster Posey will leave the club and will undergo hip surgery, ending his 2018 season. He is expected to miss the 2019 Spring Training, but be ready to go by opening day.
Last night Giants blew a 6-0 lead, and a 6-4 lead in the ninth with two outs and two strikes, and lost in extra innings to the Rangers.
