Remember last season? They began with consecutive 1-0 wins over LA, both Giants runs supplied by Joe Panik home runs. They finished the year 18.5 games behind the Dodgers and Panik finished with 5 homers for the season.

Of course, it's a painful memory...
Hey, I've got tickets for tomorrow's Opening Day. I've gone every year since 1996.
I hope there won't be rain, and that they'll play!
Pads and Giants split the first 2 games of the series:
"Pads 2 @ Giants 7.
Wil Myers (1 RBI), Hunter Renfroe (1 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 home run), and Manuel Margot each had 2 hits with Greg Garcia scoring the second Padres run. Joey Lucchesi (2-1) allowed 7 runs on 7 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts in 4 innings. Evan Longoria and Solarte each had 1 run scored and 1 RBI, Crawford and Buster Posey had 1 run scored each, Gerardo Parra scored 2 runs, Pillar had 1 run scored and 4 RBI's, and Austin had the 7th Giants RBI. Derek Holland (1-1) allowed 1 run on 5 hits (1 home run) with 2 walks and 9 strikeouts in 7 innings. The D'Backs walk off the Rangers 5-4, the Dodgers get shut out in St. Louis 4-0, and the Rockies lose to the Braves 7-1. Dodgers remain in first at 8-4 still 1 up on the 7-5 Padres, D'Backs are a game and a half back at 6-5, Giants improve to 4-8 and 4 back while the Rockies bring up the rear 5 games back at 3-9.
The rubber game and finale of the 3 game series is on Wednesday. Dereck Rodriguez (1-1, 5.23) starts for the Giants against Nick Margevicius (0-1, 1.80) for the Padres with first pitch slated for 3:45."
I had written previously that the only reason to watch the Giants in 2020 was to see which, if any, of the players they now have, will be part of the next competitive Giants team.
So far the answer is...none, at least none of the position players. The only guys having decent seasons to this point are Mike Yastrzemski, who actually seems like a good player, but who was a rookie last year and turns 30 next week, the 32 year old Donovan Solano who is hitting 300 points above his career OPS these first 20 games, and the 27 years old Austin Slater who is also 300 OPS points over his career mark.
This is a terrible defensive team, just bloody awful. They not only lead all MLB in errors, but they are constantly making mental mistakes, the sort that don't go for errors but cost the team just as much.
Bart hit well in the minors and is poised to take over for Posey. What I do not understand is why in the 2020 draft, the Giants took another catcher with their first pick, Patrick Bailey from North Carolina. It is as if they had no confidence in Bart, and I cannot see why that would be.

Not sure, and you ask a good question. Sometimes you take the best player available when it's your turn to pick, and they can be used for later trades.
