For some reason, in 95% of this country, Lowes and HD are always within a block of each other, ever notice that?
Anyway, Im not sure about HD but can say Lowes does the 'price match' thing, within reason. They simply call the HD down the street, compare manufacturer and model number, and you get the difference. Remember, its gotta be the same model and manufacturer.
BTW, did you ever notice that where ever theres a Starbucks, there is a Subway place too, within a few doors down (or maybe its just out here)?

I know of numerous Subway stores in towns without a Starbucks and a number of Starbucks locations without a Subway nearby.
Having said that, companies like Starbuck's spend megabucks on researching good market locations. If I was a Subway franchisee, I would definitely look to see in what strip centers Starbuck's is located as I know that will be in a high traffic location WITHOUT doing a market analysis. In addition, locating your franchise near a Starbucks, Home Depot, or Walmart is a guarantee that you will have THOUSANDS of people driving past each day.

I shop both. I often go to lowes as they have closer locations. But recently I purchased clips to hold in storm windows. They were 6 and change at lowes and 2 and change at HD. They're the SAME EXACT THING. I purchased the one's at lowes and used them. I saw the one's at HD and purchased an equal amount and am returning them to lowes for a refund. I don't need the receipt, they can find it with my visa card.

The problem with people in general is that they go to the local independents and the Ace for the advice and then head over and buy all of the materials at the big box stores. Then they wonder why that helpful guy closed down his business and is no longer available.
you are so right and I have done it myself, to my chagrin, now that you pointed out that little character flaw..... I will try and not do it in the future.
I have a Lowe's close at hand but tend to drive 5 miles to a HD for a bigger selection, IMO. Now, I do like flowers at Lowe's but HD carries the fertilizer that I prefer though it is very expensive compared to the brands Lowes carries. It just seems like HD has more of the things I want and they definitely are always coming by wanting to know if they can help me as I tend to browse, except when I want them to help me.....LOL. Yeah, HD is my store.
I like an Ace but not one close enough to shop at much anymore. For years we did have one fairly close and we went there often.
well i think lowes is more exspensive but they have better stuff. i have noticed that home depot is cheaper but everytime i efing go in there i almost wind up breaking my neck on something the store is never cleaned and crap in the isles and the sales people are never around to help you and or just brush you off and act like they don't hear you. i like lowes better and in my book you get what you pay for and sometimes you have to pay for better service!!
I was curious : I went to ACE because it was next to my cell phone company and they quoted me $ 10 for a snow shovel ( plastic handle ) and $ 12 for a wooden handle. How much do you guys pay for your shovel at Home Depot or Lowes ?
