I saw something that ruined my day (I'm being dramatic but this is pretty sad to me) on Twitter yesterday from a local developer I follow. He shared a Bisnow article quoting someone from the Bellevue that Zara was prepared to sign a lease for 40k sq ft, and backed out the day after the September looting occurred. I had been hoping Zara would return and they were literally about to - this probably closes the door on it in the future too.

West Elm is officially closing. The store is in liquidation mode - I went in to buy a few things yesterday and they said the store will not be reopening in Center City anywhere else and that they will direct people to Suburban Square. Such a sad loss for the city. On the bright side, head over if you need furniture because they have some amazing deals.

While that stinks, it seems a bit dramatic / short sighted to pull out that far into the lease process.

A shame about West Elm, been there for almost 20 years. Center City needs more home stores.

Yeah I don’t 100% buy the story about Zara. No way they pulled out just because of a viral video. Bad news but there’s definitely more to that story.

LOL... you don't think lawlessness and rampant looting was the main factor a retail shop didn't drop millions to open in a market where that would very possibly be their fate? That seems like a massive deterrent to me. And I'm sure it wasn't just one video that sparked the decision. The unrest in Center City is well documented and has made national news. The leadership team probably sat down with their Finance and Legal heads and decided the risk/reward was not smart. They can open anywhere they want. You think they want the expense, grief and potential employee liability that comes with semi-regular looting and violence?

Zara operates several stores in Chicago, San Fran, and LA, all of which have had many recent incidents of looting, smash and grabs and high-end retail theft.
I find it disappointing that Philadelphia is treated differently.

Possibly. Everything retail though comes down to money. It's basically a simple formula based on potential sales and loss. Maybe their forecast showed Philly upside potential is far below that of the cities you listed. Regardless, still a shame they decided to pass on our city.
