Fascinating story. I hadn't read about it before now. IMO, I think they are alive and living in Mexico. I can't be sure of it ... just a feeling from the newspaper article. Another thought is they are all in the witness protection program. Just my two cents.

There's any number of possibilities.

I think they may have gotten rich illegally and left their bank account balance and all their belongings behind to throw investigators off their scent. Purposely causing confusion.

Missing 3 years now. Very puzzling case. Someone posted a picture on the Internet that he accidentally took of a man surfing in a NJ beach, looking just like Joseph Mcstay. NJers keep your eyes open.

I really found this a very odd thing to say coming from the father of the missing man. It doesn't sound as though dad feels he's son's in danger, just 'surfing'. Would you be saying something like that if you felt your child were kidnapped or dead?

Missing California family could be here, father says

"A California family of four vanished in February, and the husband’s father said Thursday that he thinks the family may be in Costa Rica. “My son Joseph is an avid surfer and would never be able to not surf,’ said Patrick McStay via e-mail. “I say this because I’m aware that Costa Rica has an avid amount of American Surfers that live and travel there to surf..."
sounds like a man who is hanging on to the very dimmest hope that his son is out there, just surfing.

i did find it weird that the wife changed her name so often.

but beyond any shadow of a doubt, in my mind, that husband and wife are dead.

the kids, i bet, are probably alive. maybe in 15 years you will have these teens who start asking questions about where he came from and a dna test will confirm that they are the missing children.

My only thoughts: Maybe one spouse had the other killed and went off to Mexico w/ their girl/boyfriend to live incognito and with no one knowing the spouse was not alive, witness protection plan as someone mentioned (even though cops said no), involvement w/ drugs/selling even though no history of such activity, some major secret that had to be contained and had to leave with it, mental illness??? It's the most bizarre thing you can think of.

I hope it is not the Father, who did a "Jeffrey McDonald", only learned to leave no evidence. I believe, sadly, that there are people who could kill their family, and move on...to a new life.

Both Joseph McStay's mother and brother said that in the video at the Mexican border, they could see resemblance of Summer and the kids, but not their son/brother, so it's possible it's Summer with another man. If so, then Summer may have her husband murdered by this guy, and I wonder if the toys in the towed car had been bought for an upcoming newborn fathered by that guy??

Also there was a painter working for them, who disappeared without explanation. That was very weird, too. Wonder if the guy in the video was him??
